EP Review: Giant Star – Big Time

big time

Manchester eclectic outfit Giant Star are set to release new EP Big Time on 13th June via their own Hercules Records label. The lead track is taken from last years brilliant Year Of The Snake album and features 4 additional tracks.

Described by the Guardian as ‘Dylan, Cobain & Keith Richards gate crashing the Hacienda one Saturday night in 1989′ Giant Star offer something uniquely different with their fusion of sounds that draw on Manchester’s rich musical heritage and diverse city make up. Fronted by former Space Monkey’s singer Richard McNevin-Duff and backed by a host of talented musicians the project is set for another exciting year.

Lead track Big Time is an anthem of a track with its infectious rhythm and incessant groove that underpins the pop melody and vocal hook that makes for a track crying out for summer radio play. The EP is littered with lyrical gems such as “wise up fast like Socrates, get down on your knees like Hercules”  and a host of genre’s from the late night disco of The Riddle to the glam rock riff of 21st Century Girl, a nod to Marc Bolan’s 20th Century Boy maybe? Stand out track for me is Modern Word which takes a more dark and sinister path with its heavy rumbling bass and moody oppressive atmosphere the perfect foil for the cutting lyrics.

The Big Time EP is out now and available here the band are currently working on tracks for their 2nd album which should be released later in the year.

Track List:
1. Big Time
2. The Riddle
3. Raining Stones
4. 21st Century Girl
5. Modern World
6. Big Time (Nicky Disco Extended Mix)
